How much time to actually plan for
The guided tour lasts about one hour, but the time it takes up in the morning is different. The ticket office opens at 9:30, and they ask you to be there a quarter of an hour before departure. The underground route measures roughly half a kilometre and is almost entirely flat, so there’s no need to catch your breath on the stairs. Including the bus ride and the walk back up to the neighbourhood, I plan for two hours in total. The ticket is valid only for the date and time you purchased. If you arrive after your tour has departed, you won’t be moved to the next one: the visit is forfeited. Arriving fifteen minutes early is not just a formality.
Why the duration can’t be extended at will
You don’t enter alone. The catacombs are a protected site, and the visit is fully guided, with groups departing at fixed times: the pace is set by the guide, not the visitors. If one hour seems too short
It happens often, and it’s a recurring criticism in reviews. There are two ways to extend the day without repetition. First: the same ticket includes the Catacombs of San Gaudioso, on the other side of the Rione Sanità, and remains valid for twelve months; that’s another 45 minutes of guided tour, featuring the 17th-century noble burials. Second: the Sacred Mile, a three-hour walk connecting the saint’s tomb to his Treasury, passing through the neighbourhood, with 50 minutes guided in the catacombs and 40 in the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità.

Two levels carved into the tuff. Above, the Bishops’ Crypt, the three-naved underground basilica, and the mosaics; below, the Basilica of Sant'Agrippino, with the bishop’s throne carved into the rock and the baptismal font.
