The complex spans two connected levels, carved into tuff, and the covered route measures roughly half a kilometre. It is not a museum with arrows on the ground: it is an early Christian cemetery with frescoes dating from the 2nd to the 10th century, and unguided visits are not permitted. The ticket office opens at 9:30, departures are hourly from 10:00, and the last entry is at 17:00. You are asked to arrive fifteen minutes before your booked time, and this is not just a formality: the ticket is valid only for the purchased date and time, and those arriving after the departure will not be admitted to the next tour.

Arriving fifteen minutes early also allows you to choose where to position yourself in the group. In the wider galleries, the guide’s voice gets lost at the back: stay at the front and you will hear everything.
What does a guide do here
The catacombs are managed by the social cooperative La Paranza, from the Rione Sanità, and the guides come from the neighbourhood. The tour follows a set order: the upper level with the Bishops’ Crypt, the three-naved underground basilica and the mosaics, including that of San Quodvultdeus; then the lower level with the Basilica of Sant’Agrippino, the bishop’s throne carved into the rock and the baptismal font. Guides in other languages
The tours of the two catacombs are in Italian and English. Outside this schedule, there are two exceptions: the Ipogeo dei Cristallini, which also operates in French, Spanish, and German with groups of up to ten people, and the underground walk in the Rione Sanità, which is only in Italian.
